Tom Joyner Foundation Kicks Off 2005 Fund raising Campaign

Foundation Announces 11 Historically Black Colleges & Universities

(Atlanta, Georgia Nov. 18, 2004)  The Tom Joyner Foundation, a major driving force in raising money for historically black colleges since 1998, today announced the 11 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that it will raise money for in 2005.

The foundation, formed by the nationally syndicated radio personality, unveiled the names of the 2005 schools at its annual New Member Schools Orientation in Atlanta as part of its on-going effort to assist these institutions in broadening and strengthening their efforts to raise money to help keep students attending HBCUs.

As one of the Tom Joyner Foundation ‘Schools of the Month’ next year, each school will be promoted by the Tom Joyner Morning Show and receive those funds raised from listeners, alumni and other interested parties that month.  The show, aired in 115 markets around the country, reaches nearly eight million listeners every week.

“We’re excited to announce this year’s schools,” said Joyner, a graduate of Tuskegee Institute, is the foundation’s chairman.  “All of these schools have wonderful histories and traditions, and we want to make sure their students are able to stay in school and have the great experience, as I did, from graduating from a HBCU.”

This year’s schools are (in alphabetical order): Arkansas Baptist College, Little Rock, Ark.; Bluefield State College, Bluefield, W.Va.; West Virginia State College, Institute, W.Va.; Concordia College, Selma, Ala.; Oakwood College, Huntsville, Ala.; Stillman College, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Selma University, Selma, Ala.;  Harris Stowe State College, St Louis, Mo.;  Mississippi Valley State University, Itta Bena, Miss.; Morris College, Sumter, SC – unconfirmed; St. Pauls College, Lawrenceville, Vir.

The Tom Joyner Foundation (www.blackamericaweb.com) has raised more than $25 million and helped some 80 colleges and thousands of deserving students who attend HBCUs. Since its inception, the foundation has assisted every HBCU, which is defined as “any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans.”
